Twitter transformed a $7500 domain name purchase and innovative idea into a billion dollar venture. Naming a company and going after the domain name is important.

You don't want to wait until you generate millions of unique visits per month before making an offer for a domain name. It will cost a fortune to acquire the domain name. Thanks for sharing.

Actually, by and large I'm happy with them. When I hit around 300 registrations they assigned me a personal rep. so when I have issues I have a direct number to call. That helps. But they're so large and handling so many registrations (not to mention hosting etc) that it's not surprising that we read more horror stories. Most of the other registrars seem to have issues as well. What I really respect about GoDaddy is that their inventory eventually WILL drop (after the auction process etc). That said, I do get nervous about GoDaddy and more stories like this one would cause me to leave. I think I'd go to Fabulous, if they'd have me. In another post, Kevin Ohashi and I compare current registrars.

Everything I read lately about the godaddy team is a negative review , not just here but on multiple blogs all over the internet . Alot of users of godaddy or should I say , former users complain about the bad service and their methods .

Hi Brad, thanks for stopping by. I'm giving the DomainHole bulk checker a spin. Would like the option of adding a list that already included the tld. Will definitely be back. Good luck and all the best.

Thanks Chris,
Agreed, at least, that the private Whois that has become so prevalent over the last few years does the domaining industry a major disservice by disguising sleazy behavior. I want to be quick to point out though that I do think there is room in the world for people who invest in domain names with the idea of later selling them. As long as they are generic or made up words and don't cross the line into someone else's business.
If you've been doing business as a non profit for some time you have a Common Law trademark. You might want to send the squatter a Cease and Desist letter. See:
http://www.domainsherpa.com/6-ways-to-recover-a-domain-name-from-an-infringing-cybersquatter/

A Good Deed well done sir!

Personally I think the physical address and picture of all domain squatters should be put online for quick resolution.

I sit on the board of a non-profit community theater and when one of our board members was late re-registering our .org domain name it got grabbed by a squatter. Luckily for us we were able to get the .com version.

Your blog entry shows me some ideas that might help me get going on getting our .org back. Thanks!

Thanks for your thoughts Mark! Especially your frank opinion that it might be more trouble than worth. It is very easy for me to get carried away. I used to contribute names at PickyDomains. My names would get 'liked' occasionally, but I never ended up with the prize money, even though the domains often were registered shortly thereafter. I did it more for fun and kept the good names. I hadn't seen SquadHelp, but I see that it's 99Designs for names and logos. It's quite similar to what I had in mind. But while both of those services invite the crowd to submit ideas, they lack in the ability to have the crowd participate in the evaluation of a name. HNTrades is interesting. An HN-like platform that supported voting up might be simple enough to start. Will think on it some more and follow up shortly. Thanks again for your input.

Great names John. I prefer CrowdNamer.

The service is something that is needed by many, but you will be starting off against several well established competitors. (PickyNames, SquadHelp)

I believe this project would end up being more work than there is potential for reward. Though you could start off with something very simple like hntrades.com

Modified Q&A script could work well for this. Let me know if you want to talk further.
